Back when I was doing fugitive recovery as a Bail Bond Agent, I always wore my primary sidearm in a leg holster.

I found that my pistol was much more secure in a foot chase, and closer to my natural hand  position if I needed to access the weapon,
Another advantage that I soon discovered was that if someone tried to go for my holstered weapon ( unless they were  dwarf ) they had to bend over to do it. 

This gave me a physical advantage allowing me to more easily take down the bad guy and maintain control of the situation...

These are extreme cases, but even for the recreational shooter leg holsters are great. If you have never tried one I think you will love it.
I actually wear one on the range along with my standard belt holster with one weapon above the other... It's like a dual neck guitar.
