PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
To accommodate the new more powerful 7.5x55 cartridge introduced in 1911, it was determined that the M1896 -but not the M1889- could be converted to handle the new cartridge by re-barreling the rifle. M1896 rifles were converted to 1896/11s by replacing or modifying the following: rebarreling the action, new front and rear sights, and a pistol grip was grafted onto the original straight stock of the rifle. The new rifles were also fitted with 6 round magazines, similar to the 1889/1900 pattern magazine, minus the reinforcing ridge, although the magazine did include a bolt hold-open feature for when the magazine was empty, and new trigger-guard was fitted to accommodate the new magazine.
The Swiss are renowned for their quality workmanship and attention to detail, and the Swiss soldiers typically took very good care to keep their rifles functional and serviceable. However, they used their rifles and carried them in training in very harsh weather conditions. As such it is very typical for the external surfaces of Swiss surplus rifles to be well used and you can expect these rifles to have some of dents and dings. This lot appears to be in Good to Very Good Condition during our inspection. The Swiss never used corrosive ammo and all of the bores we have seen have been exceptional. These rifles combined with the round they fire are well known for being match accurate.
Solid and functional rifles, these rifles are available in NRA Good to Very Good Condition. We also are offering a Hand Select Option if you would like us to select the best of 10 when we are picking your order.
